Oudemanhuisspoort

A secret covered passage in one of the oldest parts of the city.

The Oudemanhuispoort or ‘Old Man’s House Gate’ is a passage near the Faculty of Law of the University of Amsterdam where second-hand textbooks, prints and sheet music are sold.

In earlier days the surrounding buildings and hidden garden of the Oudemanhuispoort were an almshouse for the elderly. Today you can shop in the many stalls that line both sides of the passage, maps, music sheet, prints and poster.

Halfway through the passage is a large door that gives access to a green courtyard, which nowadays belongs to the University of Amsterdam.

At this book market, Vincent van Gogh sometimes bought books. For lack of money, he paid with portraits.
